Cambodia

Cambodia is located at the southernmost parts of the Mekong river basin to the delta. The river is the economic and life source of Cambodia with more than three-fourths of 16.9 million people living along the basin. The country is one of the most disaster-prone in South-East Asia with more frequent occurrences of floods and droughts over the last decade. Moreover, the delayed rains during the wet season and flash flooding from the Mekong River have exacerbated disaster events since 2002.

Cambodia has an overall risk index of 4.8. The country’s most common disaster events of floods (9.5), tsunamis (5.2), and droughts (4.6).

Members of Preparedness Partnership of Cambodia (PPC)

NCDM was established in 1995 to facilitate the coordination of the multi-ministry response to emergency and disaster events. It provides the overall leadership Plan of Action for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) coordination in Cambodia.

CHF was established in 2012 under the project “Strengthening Emergency Response Capacity of Humanitarian NGOs in Cambodia” funded by United States Agency of International Development (USAID). The project is coordinated by Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and in-county partners NCDM and Royal University of Phnom Penh. Its leading NGO is Partnership for Development in Kampuchea (PADEK).

Watch how ADPC’ worked with Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, and other partners to enhance the disaster response capacity of Cambodia by establishing Cambodian Humanitarian Forum (CHF) that has brought together national response and humanitarian NGOs with a common message and commitment of providing collective response. The program focused on improving humanitarian response and strengthening the leadership capacity of NGOs across Cambodia – with support from the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) and Partnership for Development for Kampuchea (PADEK).

Asian Preparedness Partnership (APP) is an upscaling of work completed under the CHF pilot project implemented by ADPC and USAID Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance which successfully lead to strengthening of the local humanitarian network through a series of capacity development activities.
