On October 31, 2024, the Academic Sector of the Bangladesh Preparedness Partnership (BPP) hosted a significant workshop in Dhaka to commemorate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR). This important event brought together students and faculties from various universities, including Dhaka University, BRAC University, Chittagong and Khulna University, Begum Rokeya University, and other universities from various regions of Bangladesh involved in disaster management education. The workshop focused on the role of academia in disaster preparedness and initiated dialogue for establishing a nationwide education network to enhance disaster readiness in high-risk districts of Bangladesh by engaging youth. Aligned with this year’s theme for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, “Empowering the Next Generation for a Sustainable Future,” the workshop emphasized the role of education and collaboration in improving disaster management practices.

During the workshop, Chief Guest Mr. Kamrul Hasan, Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), noted Bangladesh’s role as a model in disaster management, leveraging tools such as geographic mapping and early warning systems. He remarked, “This gathering of university youth and academia beyond Dhaka will significantly boost local disaster preparedness and disaster management activities, and we are committed to implementing the recommendations from this workshop.”

Professor Mahbuba Nasreen emphasized the need for national collaboration in disaster management, while Joint Secretary, MoDMR – Ms. Lutfun Nahar highlighted the potential of energetic youth to drive inclusive disaster preparedness. Faculty members from various universities, including, Dr. Md. Nur Hossain from the University of Chittagong and Dr. Tuhin Roy from Khulna University, and Dr. Muhammad Ahsan Ullah from ADPC contributed insights on the importance of integrating academic research into practical disaster management strategies. Young researchers showcased innovative projects, setting the stage for discussions on youth involvement in building resilient communities. The workshop effectively showcased the pivotal role of youth in disaster risk reduction and resilience-building, setting the stage for future collaborations. By empowering the next generation, we take vital steps toward a disaster-resilient future for Bangladesh.

Learning and Empowerment

The technical sessions promoted active participation and collaborative group work moderated by the Prof. Mahbuba Nasreen. This format facilitated meaningful exchanges between youth and sectoral partners, emphasizing the need for collective efforts in disaster preparedness. Presentations from various sectors, including government, NGOs, and academia, underscored the role of diverse stakeholders in enhancing disaster resilience, reinforcing the theme of education as vital for addressing future challenges.

The Path Forward

The establishment of the BPP Academic Network promises to foster collaboration among institutions dedicated to disaster preparedness. The BPP is an initiative designed to support the Government of Bangladesh in implementing the Standing Order on Disaster (SOD) 2019. It focuses on enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience through collaboration among government entities, academic institutions, NGOs, and the private sector. Led by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), the initiative receives technical guidance from the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and financial backing from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
