Innovations Forum for a Safer Asia

Dec 01
Location: Kathmandu, Nepal

Innovation is an important aspect of adaption which equips people with scientific information and technology. Limited not just to technology, innovation can take many forms such as new knowledge, changes in behavior and improved processes for finding solutions. Time and again, communities face repeated disasters, often coming up with local solutions to manage them. The worrying trends of increasing disasters, climate change and complex emergencies necessitate new ways of thinking and approaches towards DRR actions.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) 2015-2030 also lays emphasis on “use and expansion of thematic platforms of cooperation, such as global technology pools and global systems to share know-how, innovation and research and ensure access to technology and information on disaster risk reduction”. In line with the burgeoning localization agenda of World Humanitarian Summit and SFDRR, Asian Preparedness Partnership (APP) has been formed as a multi-stakeholder partnership by Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). APP aims to improve inter-organizational coordination and dialogue between governments, local humanitarian organization networks and private sector networks in South & South-East Asia in preparedness for response across the region.

Utilizing this collaborative partnership, APP envisages to nurture and flourish innovations for humanitarian actions. On these lines, ADPC is organizing “Innovations Forum for Safer Asia” to open discussion and dialogue on promoting transformational ideas led by individuals, communities and organizations for DRR. The forum would lead the way in turning these ideas into workable solutions for reducing the impact of disasters in Asian continent.
